Awards at IFPA 2023

The purpose, criteria, and recipients (where known ahead of the meeting) of awards at the IFPA 2023 meeting are detailed below.

Please visit the speaker page for further biographical information on our IFPA 2023 award speakers.

Award Lectures at IFPA 2023.

Joan Hunt Senior Award in Placentology

The Joan Hunt Senior Award in Placentology is intended to recognize the work of established senior scientists/PIs/clinicians who have lead placental research groups for a substantial period of time (as a guide to nominators/applicants, more than 20 years might be appropriate) and have made a significant contribution to our understanding of placental and reproductive functions in general. Special emphasis is placed on the requirement that nominees be IFPA members who have contributed significantly to the development, leadership and/or mission of IFPA. Awardees may also be able to demonstrate a commitment to teaching of reproduction/placenta, to the development of young placental researchers and/or communication of placental research to the public. Candidates should be proposed by at least three individuals.

This award represents the highest distinction of the international placental research community. There will be no monetary prize associated with the Award. The awardee will receive a certificate and a special gift as a souvenir contributed by the organizer of IFPA meeting in the year of the award. The awardee will be invited to present a lecture during a plenary session of the IFPA meeting at which the Award will be presented. The lecture will be published in “Trophoblast Research” following normal peer review procedures. IFPA will provide up to USD$1500 towards the recipient’s economy-class airfare to the meeting at which the award is being given.

IFPA Award in Placentology

The “IFPA Award in Placentology” acknowledges outstanding contributions to the field of placentology in all its aspects, including the relationship with fetus and mother by established investigators who are normally within 20 years of receipt of their terminal degree.

The IFPA Award in Placentology consists of USD$2000 plus accommodation and registration at next meeting. The awardee will be invited to present a lecture during a plenary session of the same IFPA-designated meeting. The lecture will be published in “Trophoblast Research” following normal peer review procedures.

NIH Award Lecture

The NIH-Lecturer designation supports the travel and attendance of an established US investigator who gives a cutting edge, contemporary plenary lecture at the annual IFPA meeting. This individual will not necessarily be a placental biologist, but may be a leader in an area with relevance to placental biology (e.g. angiogenesis, apoptosis, cancer biology) and will serve as a focal point for a plenary session and workshop in that area. In this way placental biologists can be exposed to the latest developments in that particular field. The speaker is identified by the annual conference organizers in discussion with the NIH R13 PI.

Andrée Gruslin Award

The Andrée Gruslin Award is named in honour of Dr. Andrée Gruslin, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist and researcher who, while battling breast cancer, continued not only her obstetrical service but also drove a well-known research program until her death in 2014. She spent her life researching placental health as a way of reducing risk from conditions such as preeclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction. This prize will be offered every year to an outstanding female mid-career investigator in the field of placental or placental-related biology. As a guide, candidates should be at the assistant/associate professor level. The candidates can be nominated by others or can self-nominate. As the 2022 award was only open to US-based investigators, in 2023 only nominations of non-US based investigators will be considered.

The award comprises a prize of USD$2500 (donated by Elsevier) and an invitation to contribute an article to the annual issue of “Trophoblast Research”. The article will be subject to normal peer review procedures. The 2023 awardee will present a lecture at the IFPA meeting.

Elsevier Trophoblast Research Award Lecture – Dr William Cooke

Dr William Cooke was the winner of the Elsevier Trophoblast Research New Investigator Award at the most recent IFPA meeting in 2021 (see below for award details), and will deliver his award lecture at the 2023 meeting.

Presentation Based Awards to be decided at the 2023 IFPA meeting

The Elsevier Placenta New Investigator Award

The Elsevier Placenta New Investigator Award acknowledges the best Oral Presentation by a New Investigator in the field of placentology in all its aspects, including the relationship with fetus and mother. The award is decided based on presentations delivered in the New Investigator Award sessions at the annual IFPA meeting. The award consists of USD$1000, and free access to Elsevier ScienceDirect for one year. There will also be an award of USD$500 for the runner-up.

The Elsevier Trophoblast Research New Investigator Award

The Elsevier Trophoblast Research New Investigator Award is presented for the best Poster Presentation by a New Investigator at an IFPA meeting. This award is the oldest award made by IFPA and reflects the importance IFPA attaches to the presentation most commonly made by trainees. The award is chosen at the meeting, after the poster is presented to the judges.

The award consists of USD$1500, an invitation to present their work in a plenary lecture at the following year’s IFPA-designated meeting, and free registration and accommodation at the following year’s meeting. The winner will also receive free access to Elsevier ScienceDirect for one year. There will also be an award of USD$500 for the runner-up.

Early Career Travel Awards

IFPA has a long tradition of promoting career development for New Investigators and encouraging their attendance at IFPA meetings to present their own work, hear the latest advances from experts in the field, and develop research connections. To this end, IFPA provides a large number of New Investigator travel awards from various sponsors, whom we are grateful to for providing support.

New Investigators are defined as students or researchers in full-time training or researchers who are within three years of their senior degree (e.g. Ph.D., M.D.). The awards are based on a review of abstracts submitted for an IFPA-designated meeting. Candidates should indicate they wish their abstract to be considered at the time of submission.

Eligible New Investigators should select the New Investigator box when submitting their abstracts, and submit a ‘New Investigator Status Form’ at the time of abstract submission.

Charlie L. W. Loke Travel Awards

These awards are supported by the Centre for Trophoblast Research, University of Cambridge, and have changed from previous years. For 2023 two Loke awards will be available to New Investigators in any aspect of placental research, each of £1,250 in value. These awards will be given to the two top scored New Investigator Abstracts submitted to the meeting, and are open to New Investigators from any area of the world.

Elsevier New Investigator Travel Awards

These awards are open to New Investigators from any area of the world. The usual value of these awards is USD$500, however in 2023 IFPA will support awards of USD$1000 to be made to New Investigators travelling from outside the local region (ie outside Australasia) to help offset their increased travel costs. New Investigators from within Australasia are eligible for these awards to a value of USD$500.

National Institutes of Health New Investigator Travel Awards

These travel awards are to enable US-based new investigators in any aspect of placental research to attend the annual meetings of IFPA. The awards are based on a review of abstracts submitted for an IFPA-designated meeting. This award is to offset travel expenses for around 15 US-based new investigators per meeting (depending on funds). Award value: USD$1000.

ANZPRA New Investigator IFPA Travel Awards

These awards are to enable New Investigators that are ANZPRA members to attend ANZPRA-hosted IFPA meetings.  The awards are based on review of submitted abstracts. 12 awards of USD$500 value are available.

IFPA Burroughs Wellcome Fund Travel Awards

The IFPA Burroughs Wellcome Fund Travel Awards are a new scheme established in 2023 to support the travel of North American (Canada, USA) early and mid-career researchers to IFPA meetings (including New Investigators within 3 years of their PhD, but not limited to this category).  Awards are made based on abstract scores, and provide $1000USD to offset travel expenses. 10 awards were available for the 2023 IFPA meeting.
